In 1999 I began collecting histories of Austen families and includied in the material was the story of the Austens of Shalford from Barbara Godwin-Austen Fowler, a descendant living in California. When she beganorganising a family gathering for June 2000 in Colorado for the descendants of Robert Alfred Cloyne Godwin-Austen, most of whom, though not all, were living in the United States, we decided to publish this work by Sir Alfred Bingley for the occasion. In that task I am indebted also to Sandra Godwin-Austen Hicks for her painstaking preoof reading and her collection of additional pedigree material, and to Barbara for unearthing Part IV.The text is as written by Sir Alfred Bingley. I have added the note from Who Was Who and the illustrative charts placed in the text. Footnotes 1-3 were in the original text. I have added the rest where some corrections to names were needed. The original manuscript indicated five appendices. These did not eventuate. We have produced two pedigrees as appendices from Stephen austen of Stapleford to the generation of Robert Alfred Cloyne Austen, who by letters patent added Godwin to the family name in honour of his father-in-law.
In such an undertaking, mistakes are almost bound to occur, despite much proof reading and correcting. We would appreciate corrections to what is a fascinating story covering almost 600 years and would welcome additional material. Contents |
