A word of caution.
This chart has been compiled from a variety of secondary sources. It is subject to further checking, and hopefully, additions. **** The Austen family appeared in Tenterden at the end of the 16th century, when William Austen purchased Eastgate in the Woodchurch Road and married Elizabeth Hales, a sister to John Hales, the Mayor of 1600.
William's second son John bought great Heronden in 1600, the same year in which his third son Robert received a baronetcy from Charles II, and moved to Bexley where he died in 1666. John, being childless, left Great Heronden on his death in 1655 to his nephew Robert (II), who left it to the eldest of his three sons, William who sold it to Richard Righton, who's son Benjamin sold it to Jeremiah Curteis in 1782. Hall Place, Bexley
Sir Robert Austen (1587–1666) bought the house in 1649 , and added a second wing built of red bricks, doubling the size of the house but without trying to harmonise the two halves built in highly contrasting architectural styles. He was created 1st Baronet, of Hall Place in Bexley, on 10 July 1660 and briefly held the office of High Sheriff of Kent. The house remained in the Austen family until the mid 18th century when Robert Austen (1697–1743), the 7th baronet (Sheriff of Kent in 1724 and MP for New Romney from April 1728 to 1734), died and the estate was eventually purchased (c. 1772) by his brother-in-law Sir Francis Dashwood..
