Notes
This tree is partly speculative. John Austin and his wife Barbara had children in Pevensey before emigrating to Pennsylvania, USA. There were other children in their care as well, John, Caroline, Sarah and Elizabeth. From Caroline's headstone giving her birth date, baptismal dates for John, Sarah and Caroline with their parents, John Austin and Ann have been found in Battle. The link is probable but not proven.
An Ann Austin was buried in Pevensey in 1811. A marriage between widower John Austin and widow Barbara Elphick occurred in Lewes in 1812. A Barbara Elphick was baptised in Willingdon in 1781. The connection looks plausible but is circumstantial. John's birth to Henry and Elizabeth Austen at East Grinstead is also speculative, yet feasible. DNA match A DNA match has been found to the family of Ambrose Austen (b 1757), of Marden and Ohio in the USA. Ambrose's father is Thomas of Yalding, Kent (d 1802) and we know that he had a nephew John in Penshurst. There is also a match with another austin family connected with Kenardington in Kent. The search for the link continues. |
