Pine Creek
[LP] Early Pennsylvania promotional programs offered wilderness property for free under the indentured servitude program. William Penn's holy experiment of religious freedom had opened the fertile farmland of Eastern Pennsylvania to the Amish and Mennonites a century earlier. The Ulster Scots, or Scotch-Irish, were streaming into Western Pennsylvania to establish farms. Pittsburgh was an early settlement; Fort Pitt. There were many Indian skirmishes in and around the Fort but by the mid 1700s a major road had been built between Philadelphia and Fort Pitt. By the time that Charles and family needed it, it was a broad wagon road. Charles and his family, Sarah, Thomas, Charles Jr and Susan settled at McCandless township. [relationship to Pine Creek?]. Thomas stayed on the farm till 1844 when he moved to Richland. Charles Jr became a carpenter and married Anna Jones. Susan married John Grubbs of a neighbouring farm and later moved to Oregon. In 1927 the original farmland was acquired for a public park. |
